If you are going to be attending a wedding, a formal dance, a ball, a state dinner, a prom, a cocktail party, an art gallery opening, even a funeral -- there could be a need for a formal outfit. Men are easy because a standard and classic tuxedo usually works. For women, the choices are much wider. They could be wearing a long evening gown, short cocktail dress, nice pantsuit, and myriad things in between. If you've been invited to an event and it's not clear what to wear, you can just ask.
